Highlands
- The first city of the Americas, walked with a historian rather than a headset
- The sugar mill ruins of Boca de Nigua, UNESCO-listed and almost always empty
- Pre-Columbian rock art in the Pomier caves
- A working-class Santo Domingo neighbourhood, visited properly and with people who live there
- Cacao and casabe made the way they have been made for centuries
Day by day
Day 1
Arrival. Colonial Zone at dusk, welcome dinner in a courtyard restaurant.
Day 2
Santo Domingo in depth: Colonial Zone, the Museum of Resistance, and the Tres Ojos caves and lagoons.
Day 3
A different Santo Domingo: local neighbourhood immersion with community hosts, cable car over the city, lunch cooked by a host family. Afternoon by the sea at Juan
Dolio.
Day 4
The Afro-Dominican south: Engombe ruins, the Boca de Nigua sugar mill, Pomier cave art, and a criollo lunch on Palenque beach.
Day 5
Rural day inland: cacao and casabe workshops, traditional lunch, swimming in a natural cave.
Day 6
Departure.
